Bringing Quality British-Made Furniture to Market: The Story of SPELK Studio

SPELK Studio

Kelly Smith’s story in the furniture design industry reflects the drive and commitment that fuels her success. With a background in physics, computer programming, and design, Kelly founded SPELK Studio in 2022, a company dedicated to creating high-quality, solid wood furniture. From concept to production, Kelly’s vision is simple: to support British manufacturing while providing customers with beautifully crafted furniture that lasts.

From Physics to Furniture Design

Kelly’s background is unique. After completing a degree in physics and working as a computer programmer, she transitioned into design.

“I started designing software and then expanded into designing physical products,” Kelly shared. “I went on to do a PhD in design and eventually became a teacher in the field.” However, after having her son, Kelly found that the rigidity of teaching no longer fit with her lifestyle. Seeking flexibility, she made a bold decision to start her own business in furniture design.

“I design the furniture, work with UK manufacturers to produce it, and sell directly to consumers. It’s an exciting journey,” Kelly explained. SPELK Studio initially focused on one-off, bespoke furniture, but Kelly soon recognised the potential to expand into off-the-shelf designs.

Transitioning to Off-the-Shelf Production with DCI’s Support

In 2024, Kelly joined the Durham City Incubator (DCI) Business Incubation Programme for support with this transition.

“When I joined DCI, I already had the designs for the off-the-shelf furniture in place,”

Kelly explained. “But I needed help with moving it into production, navigating how to partner with a manufacturer, tackling legal issues like trademarks, non-disclosure agreements, and copyright for my designs.”

It was about moving from being a small design business that creates one-offs to becoming a fully fledged creative studio with the ability to manufacture in batches.

Funding for CAM Design

Through DCI, Kelly secured a grant for the CAM design (computer-aided machining) of the first dining table in her collection.

“This is basically where they program the computers to create the furniture,” Kelly explained. “So now we have the CAM programme the factory can now make as many tables as I want.”

These tables will be made in solid wood, reinforcing Kelly’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

Supporting British Manufacturing

One of the driving forces behind Kelly’s business is her commitment to supporting British manufacturing. “By working with UK manufacturers, I know that the people making the furniture are paid fairly, work in safe conditions, and comply with strict environmental regulations,” she said.

Kelly’s vision is also rooted in the belief that supporting British businesses helps boost the local economy. “If I source products from overseas, the UK benefits very little. But when I work with a British manufacturer, the money circulates back into the local economy, creating jobs and opportunities for people in these communities,” Kelly explained.

Overcoming Challenges and Expanding the Business

The road to production wasn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles Kelly faced was finding a UK manufacturer willing to work with small batch sizes.

“Many manufacturers only want to produce large quantities, so I had to find a company willing to work with smaller batches,” Kelly said. “It’s been a long process, but I’ve finally found the right manufacturer.”

Through DCI, Kelly also attended workshops on strategy, branding, and legal issues, which helped her build the skills needed to grow the business.

“Learning how to market my business on social media has been a game-changer. Now I know how to reach new customers and grow the brand,” she said.

Looking to the Future

Kelly hopes to expand SPELK Studio’s product range and grow the business.

“In a few years, I’d love to have several furniture products in my catalogue,” Kelly said. “Ideally, I’d also like to have a premises where I can produce larger batches, which will allow me to reduce costs and increase profitability.”

Kelly also has aspirations to expand into other homewares like plates, candles, and blankets. “I need warehouse space to store products in bulk, as well as a showroom for clients to view samples,” she added.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those considering starting their own business, Kelly offers this advice: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There’s so much to learn, and no one knows it all. Take advantage of the support available to you, whether it’s from DCI or other resources.”

Conclusion

SPELK Studio is a perfect example of how innovation, passion, and support from the right programmes can help turn a business idea into reality. Kelly Smith’s dedication to creating quality, British-made furniture while supporting local economies and manufacturing is inspiring. With the support from DCI, Kelly is poised for even greater success as she expands her product range and grows her business.
